Harvest losses by drought, salt and heat stress amount to about 60 % of total productivity, making abiotic stress tolerance a key aim in crop improvement. Although all plants can respond to changing environmental conditions, the ability of a variety of plants to adapt to extreme stress conditions often depends on the association with specific rhizosphere microbes. It is therefore timely to unravel the molecular mechanisms how rhizosphere microbes enable plants to adapt to stress and use this knowledge for securing food production in a sustainable way.
