Mahfouz Laboratory for Genome Engineering

Professor Mahfouz's research interests are focused on developing key technologies that enable precise engineering of genomes and manipulation of biological systems.

We use these technologies to learn and manipulate the properties of biological systems and to generate useful insights that can be utilized in addressing key global challenges in food, water, energy, and environment. It will be possible to engineer cells and diverse plant species for improved and novel traits and to serve as factories for the production of select- chemicals, drugs, and biofuels. Our research focuses on developing robust, CRISPR/Cas9-based, genome engineering technologies and biotechnological applications for targeted improvement of crop traits. Moreover, we use these technologies to address basic biological questions that relate to plant growth and development, and responses to environmental cues.
