Vision & Objectives

The goal of the Desert Agriculture Initiative at KAUST is to take a systems approach to food production for the future by seeking to develop low-input, water-efficient, intensive, sustainable systems of food and feed production suitable to a coastal desert environment based on seawater and powered by sunlight. The Desert Agriculture Initiative is a multidisciplinary effort to foster inter-center collaborations with the Water Desalination and Reuse Center (WRDC), the Red Sea Research Center (RSRC), the Computational Biosciences Research Center (CBRC), the Coastal and Marine Resources Lab (CMOR), the Advanced Membranes and Porous Materials Center (AMPMC), the Solar and Photovoltaics Engineering Research Center (SPERC) and engage with individual faculty, and several external organizations and companies.

The Desert Agriculture Initiative objectives span the range from basic to applied research to educational outreach and business development.
